01. This land was ruled by Maratha rulers in pre-modern and medieval times.
02. The Marathas formed alliances and signed treaties with the Portuguese to protect the region from attacks by the Mughals and the British Army. In return, the Marathas offered the Portuguese to collect taxes from the villages of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
03. Portuguese influence eventually increased after the loss of Maratha power in the Third War of Panipat and the Portuguese became sole rulers of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
